Spanish Immersion vs 1-on-1 Tutoring: What Really Helps with Speaking Fluently

As someone deeply passionate about languages (speak 4 fluently), I've spent years experimenting with different ways to get truly fluent, especially in Spanish.

I have tried everything from apps, private 1-2-1 tutoring, language exchange meetups, to fully immersive experiences and here is what worked to increase my fluency and become much more confident.

To tell the truth, all contributed to where I am now, but I can wholeheartedly say that the Full Immersion Experience changed the way I live Spanish - not just how I speak it.
That realisation later inspired me to help others experience the same through Spanish Immersion UK.

Intensive 1-on-1 Tutoring: Structure & Personal Attention

I have always loved learning languages in a more private 1-2-1 way, since the very beginning. I was 14 when I started learning (obsessing over) Italian, and after a year learning on my own, drowning in books and dictionaries, I knew I needed more.

Bear it in mind that when I was 14, there were no podcasts, Duolingo, Netflix, and very few language exchanges, so learning a language was significantly reliant on private tutoring and school lessons.

My mum found a fantastic teacher who was THE BEST - patient, organised and relentlessly focused on helping me with everything - verbs, conjugations, pronunciation, etc. I had 2 sessions/ week for 2 years.

  • I progressed rapidly, which gave me structure, confidence plus I studied LOADS in between classes; however, I still couldn't say 2 sentences without freezing or hesitating.

Why?
Because after class, my world snapped back to Hungarian. I couldn't connect with the language properly.

And guess what? It happened the same with Spanish. I started learning 3 years ago, and after 2 years, I hit a wall. 2 years of hard work and continuously in touch with the language through podcasts, movies and Spanish Meetups... I wasn't happy with my level! Admittedly, I got very frustrated when I couldn't belong to any conversation properly, and I couldn't be ME...

Something needed to change!

Spanish Immersion: Living the Language, Feeling Connected

Everything changed when I joined my first Spanish immersion programme in my absolute favourite city, Barcelona. From the immersive classes, chatting over breakfast or dinner to exploring local markets, forming friendships every moment was in Spanish — no pause, no translation, no safety net. I was forced to use the language, and it worked like a charm (for me).

At first, it was exhausting! I am not going to lie! But soon enough, I started to hesitate less, words began to pop into my mind, and I was getting more and more confident using the language.
I even started thinking in Spanish. Big Bonus!!
I tried to imitate the rhythm, the humour, the gestures — all the beautiful, messy layers that make real conversations flow.

That experience left a lasting mark on me.

It was more than a language camp; it was a mindset shift and a confidence booster. I stopped chasing perfection and started embracing expression.

Why I Created Spanish Immersion UK

After that transformative experience, I wanted to bring the same energy — cultural, conversational, and human — to learners here in the UK, because not everyone can spend a month in Barcelona or spend over £1500 on an immersive programme.

I wanted something

  • affordable,
  • local
  • something that could ease the cultural shock, calm language/ social anxiety, and make people feel relaxed and safe,
  • Yet still offer a truly one-of-a-kind and irrevocably unique experience!

That’s exactly why I launched Spanish Immersion Retreats in the UK: retreats that replicate the feeling of being in Spain, right here in the UK, specifically in the Peak District.

Our immersion weekends combine natural conversation (all in Spanish for the whole weekend), real-life scenarios, outdoor, homemade food, and a total reset — all within a supportive community of Spanish learners and native Spanish teachers.

You don’t just study Spanish; you live it for a few unforgettable days.

No flight. No passport. No days off. Just a long weekend getaway immersed in the Spanish/ Latin-American language and Culture.

So, Which Works Best for You?

If your goal is structured progress and accountability, 1-on-1 tutoring is a great place to start.
Highly recommend as it's super tailored to your needs as well as your schedule. Here is the link to my previous teacher - SHE IS THE BEST!

  • But if you’re craving REAL connection and done with apps, a confidence boost, spontaneity, and real fluency, nothing compares to immersion.
  • It’s not about memorising words — it’s about storytelling, connection, community, experience and being brave enough to make mistakes in real conversations. (Believe me - no one cares!!!)

For me, combining both approaches was the secret sauce. Tutoring gave me the foundation; immersion made me fluent.
